My Science Observation Journal

This structured observation journal guides children through the scientific method in a child-friendly way. Each page includes prompts for a question, hypothesis, experiment steps, observations, and conclusion. It transforms everyday curiosity into real scientific inquiry.

Ages 5-10 years30-45 minutes per entryMedium

Materials Needed

  • Printed journal pages
  • Pencil and coloured pencils
  • Magnifying glass (optional)
  • Materials for chosen experiment

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Choose a Question

Help your child pick something they are curious about. "What happens when we mix vinegar and bicarbonate of soda?" or "Do plants grow faster in sunlight or shade?"

  2. 2

    Write a Hypothesis

Ask your child what they think will happen. Write their prediction in the "My Hypothesis" section. There are no wrong answers here.

  3. 3

    Conduct the Experiment

Follow the steps together. Encourage your child to write or draw each step in the "What I Did" section.

  4. 4

    Record Observations

In the "What I Noticed" section, your child draws and describes what happened. Encourage detail — colours, sounds, smells, changes.

  5. 5

    Draw a Conclusion

Was the hypothesis correct? What did they learn? Write it in the "What I Learned" section. Discuss what they might try differently next time.

What Your Child Will Learn

  • 1Understanding the scientific method: question, hypothesis, experiment, observation, conclusion
  • 2Critical thinking and analytical reasoning
  • 3Scientific vocabulary development
  • 4Writing and drawing skills through documentation
  • 5Patience and attention to detail

Tips for Parents

Start with simple, quick experiments before moving to multi-day observations.

Keep the journal in a special place so your child feels like a real scientist.

Revisit old entries together to see how their scientific thinking has developed.
