Draw Your Own Comic Strip Template

A set of printable comic strip templates with 3, 4, and 6-panel layouts. Children create their own stories using illustrations, speech bubbles, thought clouds, and narrative boxes. Builds storytelling structure, creative writing, and visual communication skills.

Ages 5-1230-60 minutesMedium

Materials Needed

  • Printed comic strip templates
  • Pencils and eraser
  • Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers
  • Ruler (optional, for neat lines)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Choose a Template

Pick a 3-panel strip for a quick joke or scene, a 4-panel strip for a short story, or a 6-panel page for a longer adventure.

  2. 2

    Plan the Story

Before drawing, discuss: Who is the main character? What happens? What is the problem? How is it solved? Sketch rough ideas on scrap paper.

  3. 3

    Draw in Pencil First

Lightly sketch characters and scenes in each panel. Start with stick figures if needed โ€” the story matters more than perfect art.

  4. 4

    Add Words

Write dialogue in speech bubbles, thoughts in cloud bubbles, and narration in boxes at the top or bottom of panels.

  5. 5

    Colour and Finish

Go over pencil lines with a dark pen or marker, then colour in. Give the comic a title and write "The End" in the last panel.

What Your Child Will Learn

  • 1Narrative structure โ€” beginning, middle, and end
  • 2Visual storytelling โ€” conveying meaning through images
  • 3Creative writing โ€” dialogue, narration, and pacing
  • 4Fine motor skills โ€” drawing within defined spaces
  • 5Sequential thinking โ€” ordering events logically

Tips for Parents

For reluctant writers, let them tell the story verbally first while you write key words on sticky notes.

Create a "character sheet" first where they design their character from different angles.

Bind multiple finished strips together to make a comic book โ€” this motivates continued creation.
